◎简 介
台湾年青军官许文强（张国荣饰）被日军追杀堕海，飘浮到外滩岸上，幸得丁力（刘德华饰）相救。二人后来合力打天下，在上海闯出名堂。上海大亨冯敬尧利用二人铲除其他阻碍他的势力，二人不虞有诈。冯敬尧育有一女冯程程（宁静饰），相处下跟许文强互生情愫，丁力虽深爱程程，却因朋友道义而将爱隐藏心底。强终发现当日在船上还伏击杀害其同僚的幕后黑手乃冯敬尧，强抓起开信刀狂刺尧，程程不堪打击成疯妇，力痛心不己，决找强算账……
◎幕后制作
本片是由徐克监制，改编自曾经轰动一时的香港电视剧(上海滩 )。剧中两位男主角许文强。丁力，原是由周润发和吕良伟饰演。在( 新上海滩 )中则是由二大天王巨星张国荣和刘德华重新表演，表现这二位30年代的英雄人物。在造形上与原形有所不同，(上海滩 )中的丁力是满脸的胡渣，( 新上海滩 ) 的 刘德华是既白净又帅气，反倒是张国荣饰演的许文强留着胡须，颓废而优雅周旋在两位男士之间的女主角宁静，娇俏可人的模样，和当年的赵雅芝又有所不同的风味，张国荣自退出歌坛后，不断在电拍照上创造佳绩，不管是《霸王别姬》还是《风月》，已是国际巨星的他演 技是无庸置疑的。而影视、歌双栖的刘德华，一直都深受广大的影迷、歌迷拥护。
两人难得同台较量，观众可一饱眼福。全片在上海实地拍外景拍摄，重现了30年代上海的华丽风情，三位主角全都卯足全力演出，危险的动作也都尽量自己来，宁静还为此投篮伤了腰骨住进医院，工作认真的留神颇令人感动
